The first-born of a WWII disabled vet, I was born (in 1946) and raised in California. My husband, Tom, and I met as Theatre majors at Occidental College in Los Angeles. A couple of wanna-be hippies and draft dodgers, we tried to make it into Canada, but a series of dramatic events brought us back into the States. Over the years we lived in Vermont, New Hampshire, North and South Carolina and, finally, Pennsylvania. During those years, we traveled as Gospel singer/songwriters before Tom began hosting and producing a Billboard award-winning video show called Lightmusic (1983-1996) out of Pittsburgh. We also became the parents of 4 children before immigrating to New Zealand in 1997. I returned to the United States in 2006 after Tom´s death in 2003, and I volunteered and taught in a women´s prison in Georgia for 11 years. I returned to New Zealand in 2017. During most of those years I was writing lyrics, short stories and articles. Life is short: Write poetry.
These days I enjoy online and in-person writing workshops, in particular those given by Tina Barry (USA), Angela Carr.(Ireland), and Joanna Preston (New Zealand). A sense of place is very important for a writer and, even though I have lived in many different places, I find in Nature that sense of place: the seasons, the sound of birds, the bees on my espaliered rosemary...
I am active on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/candaceruthgreen/) usually reposting articles I find of interest from a variety of literary magazines, topical and (sometimes political) articles from publications such as, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, and The Guardian. In private groups I particpate in writing workshops, mainly out of Ireland where there is a very lively poetry life going on. I am also active in an all women´s Toastmasters group (https://www.facebook.com/cwctoastmaster). It was the first in the world!
